Abdullahi Dare Akogun, a chairmanship candidate in the recent Kwara State Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) election, has formally petitioned the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the union, requesting the nullification of the election results.
Akogun also called for the intervention of the State Executive Council (SEC) to manage the council’s affairs until a new election can be conducted.
In a letter dated August 3, 2024, addressed to the CWC through the National Secretary, Akogun alleged multiple violations of the NUJ Constitution, including fraud and irregularities during the council election held on July 31, 2024.
He claimed that the inclusion of voters’ identities on ballot papers compromised the principle of a secret ballot, a fundamental aspect of the electoral process.
Akogun also alleged that many legitimate members were excluded from participating in the election due to a doctored delegates’ list, further undermining the fairness of the process.
Akogun additionally raised concerns about undue influence and intimidation, alleging that a director from the state ministry of information threatened voters, particularly civil servants, with job loss if they did not support a specific candidate.
This alleged coercion, according to Akogun, significantly affected the election’s outcome and integrity.
Citing relevant sections of the NUJ Constitution, Akogun emphasised that aggrieved candidates are entitled to challenge election outcomes within 21 days.
He urged the committee to review the issues dispassionately and take necessary actions to ensure justice and fairness in the electoral process.
Akogun expressed hope that the CWC would address his grievances and restore the integrity of the union’s elections.
The CWC is expected to thoroughly examine Akogun’s petition, consider the allegations presented, and take appropriate action.
