The Kwara State House of Assembly has emphasized the need for increased public awareness on climate change and its impact on livelihoods across the state.
This resolution was reached during its plenary session on Thursday, January 23, 2025, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Engr. Yakubu Danladi Salihu.
During the session, the House Leader, Hon. Magaji Oba Abdulkadir, announced the passing of Alhaji Prince Mahe Abdulkadir, the immediate past Chief of Staff to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.
The late Abdulkadir, who died on December 28, 2024, was eulogized as a distinguished member of the Alimi dynasty and a retired civil servant who served as a former Permanent Secretary and Clerk of the Kwara State House of Assembly.
“Prince Mahe was a man of great integrity and gentility, whose contributions to the growth of Kwara State will never be forgotten. We pray for Allah to grant him eternal rest in Aljanat Firdaus,” Hon. Magaji stated.
Motion on Climate Change Awareness
The session also featured a motion titled “The Need for Awareness on Climate Change and Its Effects on Human Livelihood”, sponsored by Hon. Maryam Yusuf (Ilorin South) and seconded by Hon. Abdulraheem Medinat Motunrayo (Lanwa/Ejidongari).
Hon. Yusuf highlighted the devastating effects of climate change, driven by activities such as deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, on agriculture, water resources, and ecosystems in Kwara State.
She noted that rural communities, especially farmers and fishermen, were most vulnerable to the consequences, including flooding, desertification, and environmental degradation.
“There is an urgent need to educate both urban and rural communities on the dangers of climate change and the importance of adopting sustainable practices,” Hon. Yusuf said.
Contributions from lawmakers like Hon. Saba Yisa Gideon (Edu) and Hon. Ogunniyi David Sheun (Ojomu/Balogun) further emphasized the importance of collective action and awareness to combat climate-related challenges.
Urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to direct the Ministries of Environment and Forestry, Agriculture, and KWEPA to launch a statewide public awareness campaign on climate change.
Called on the state government to partner with local and international organizations, as well as the Federal Government, for funding and technical support.
Directed Local Government Councils to integrate climate change education into school curricula and community programs.

The House adjourned after a motion by Hon. Magaji Oba Abdulkadir, seconded by Hon. Abdullahi Halidu Danbaba (Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe).
