Kuje attack: Report anyone with gun injuries – NCoS tell hospitals

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), on Wednesday, appealed to hospitals and medical facilities to report anyone with gunshot injuries.

This follow an attack on the facilities of Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja by some terrorists on Tuesday evening.

The NCoS Spokesman, Umar Abubakar in a statement said, some of the attackers were killed while some others escaped with gunshot wounds.

According to him, a total of 443 out of 879 inmates who escaped have been captured while 443 others are at large.

He said 4 inmates were killed during the attack while 16 inmates sustained various degrees of injuries and are undergoing medical intervention.

According to him, One personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje was also killed in the attack.

He said, the attackers who came through the main entrance of the facility used explosive devices simultaneously leaving three NCoS officers seriously injured.

He explained further that at the time of the attack on the Kuje facility, 38 military personnels, men of the Nigeria Police Force, Civil Defence, DSS and NCoS’ Armed Squad were on ground.

“A total of 879 inmates escaped from the facility during the unfortunate attack. As at the time of this report, 443 have been recaptured, 551 inmates are currently in custody, 443 inmates are still at large, 4 inmates dead and 16 inmates sustained various degree of injuries and are being treated at the moment,” the statement reads.

“However, efforts are ongoing to recapture all fleeing inmates

“hospitals and other medical institutions and practitioners to report anyone that comes to them for treatment for gunshot injuries to the nearest law enforcement agency.”

The NCoS spokesman said the Service would deploy its Corrections Information Management System (CIMS) in synergy with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to track all fleeing inmates and return them to custody.

He also confirmed that DCP Abba Kyari and other VIPs held in the facility did not escape, saying “they are presently in custody, hale and hearty”.
