Kaduna Electricity Workers’ Strike Enters Third .

By Ekpenyong Emmanuel

The industrial unrest at Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KADECO) has entered its third day, crippling operations and showing no signs of ending.

The National Electricity Employees Union (NUEE) has issued an ultimatum to KADECO, demanding the recall of 900 sacked employees and resolution of outstanding labor issues by February 10, 2025.

In a statement, NUEE’s Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, condemned KADECO’s actions, stating that the mass sack of employees without recourse to the company’s Conditions of Service is an insult to the union and a violation of the Nigeria Labour Act.

NUEE listed several grievances against KADECO, including non-provision of medical services, disregard for signed agreements, non-remittance of pension deductions, and failure to pay exit packages, death benefits, and electricity rebates.

The union demanded that KADECO withdraw the sack letters, rescind its decision, and address all outstanding labor issues through dialogue and collective bargaining.

Failure to comply, NUEE threatened to escalate the protest to all electricity companies across the country.

The strike has already crippled operations at KADECO, and the looming threat of national action by NUEE has raised concerns about the potential impact on the already fragile electricity sector in Nigeria.
