Kaduna declares free education for girls in public secondary schools

Governor Nasir El-Rufai has declared free education for all female students in public secondary schools in Kaduna state.

The commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Malam Ja’afaru Sani, disclosed this on Friday at a training for primary school teachers in the state.According to him, the development was aimed at getting rid of hindrances to girl-child education in the state; noting that the role of women in nation-building cannot be over-emphasized.

“The Ministry of Education has sent a directive to that effect to all zonal offices and secondary schools for implementation. Before now, only the primary school children were enjoying the free education in the state but the governor has decided to include girls in the secondary school so that they can also benefit from free education,” he said. The commissioner also disclosed that the newly recruited primary school teachers in the state will be paid their outstanding salaries by end of September this year.

The state government had in March, 2018 recruited 11,395 teachers into the public primary schools following the sack of over 22,000 teachers that were said to be incompetent.

The newly recruited teachers who are owed between three to four months salaries, he said, will be paid by the end of this month.

In addition to clearing all the backlog of salaries, he stated that the governor has directed that the responsibility of paying salaries and allowances of primary school teachers be transferred from the local government councils to the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to enable teachers get their salaries in good time.
