Justice Agim Didn’t Accompany Wike to UNICAL Convocation – Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has refuted claims that Justice Emmanuel Agim accompanied the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to the University of Calabar’s convocation ceremony.

In a statement issued on Monday, the apex court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Akande Festus, clarified that Justice Agim attended the event as an honouree and alumnus, having been awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law by the university’s Governing Council.

Festus stated, “It has come to our attention that misleading information suggests that Hon. Justice Emmanuel Agim accompanied the Hon. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, to the ceremony. We hereby dispel this false narrative.”

He explained that Justice Agim was recognized for his contributions to the legal profession and was invited independently of any government official. Although the Justice was initially scheduled to attend the burial of Justice Stanley Alagoa in Bayelsa State, he sought permission to attend the convocation instead.

The Supreme Court stressed that Agim’s participation was personal and had no connection to any ministry or political figure.

“Any insinuation to the contrary is not only inaccurate but undermines the judicial independence crucial to our democracy,” the statement added, urging the public and media to verify information before spreading misinformation.
