Several students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) are feared trapped after a storey building collapsed in Edo State.
The incident happened on Ekhator Street in Ekosodin, Benin City, following heavy rainfall on Saturday morning. Ekosodin, which is adjacent to the university, is a well-known student residential area.
A student, who requested anonymity, reported that a university rescue team managed to save some occupants from the wreckage, though many sustained serious injuries. The injured were quickly taken to the hospital for treatment.
“The rescue team is still searching for one person who remains trapped. The victim has called for help from under the rubble, and efforts are ongoing to reach and rescue them,” the student said.
The Dean of Students at UNIBEN is reportedly on-site, working with the university’s rescue team to coordinate the operation.
As of now, the university management has not yet issued an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the exact number of casualties. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
