Julius Berger Workers Flee Sites Over Protest

By Chuks Peter, DELTA

Construction giant Julius Berger has abandoned the ongoing construction site at DSC roundabout, PTI Junction and Enerhen junction in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State as the nationwide protest against hardship, hunger, bad governance in Nigeria over fears of being attacked, robbed and possibly kidnapped with the destruction of its equipment.

Our correspondent, who is currently monitoring the protest across Cuties, the town gathered that the construction company evacuated their site two days ago.

A citizen was sighted urinating at the construction site as security operatives mounted the areas at PTI junction, effusion.

Addressing ‘journalists on Thursday morning in Uvwie, Human rights activist Comrade Harrison Itulua said, “This is the reason the Citizens Right Concerned Enhancement Initiative, a k.a, human right protection Congress kicked against violence protest that will result in burn fire and violation of other Nigerians that are going through hardship,.

He said they will only increase hardship on fellow Nigerians.

“Today, being the first day of August 2024 is supposed to be the commencement of the protest; we are not against peaceful protest but against violent protest whereby youths will burn tyres on the streets, block the roads, depriving others of their rights. In as much as they have their rights to peaceful protest, others have their rights to free movements.

“One of the dangers of violent protest is what will scare developers away from the State and Nigeria at large.

“For instance, Delta State Government has paid heavily for the construction of flyovers within PTI Junction, Enerhen Junction and DSC roundabout. Surprisingly, construction giant Julius Berger evacuated the site during our monitoring of the protest exercise for fear of the unknown so that hoodlums would not hijack the protest. Since the president has given us his word, NNPC should sell crude oil to Dangote in naira as well as adopted measures; I think we should give him some time because we don’t want our state to be ten(10) years backwards.”

While noting that when Protesters went to the streets to embrace violent protest during the ENDSARS in 2020 in Udu Communities, Delta State, a lot of banks were vandalised and destroyed. “This is the reason we are calling for a peaceful protest.

Comrade Itulua strongly appealed to the youths to embrace peaceful dialogue by embracing the use of the media.

“Due to the insecurity, I appeal to the youths to sheath their swords and listen to the voice of reasoning from the presidency to avoid any breakdown of law and order that will later fall back to members of the public who are also passing through hardships.”

As of 10am, the protest has only commenced in the Sapele area of the state while other areas are jet to begin their protest.
