The wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after her release from a United Kingdom prison.
A source revealed that Beatrice, who was sentenced to five years in 2023 for her involvement in an organ trafficking case, arrived in the country on Tuesday and is currently in Abuja.
In her hometown of Mpu, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, celebrations erupted as the news of her return spread.
Residents described the development as a source of immense joy and relief for the community, which has long awaited her return.
Speaking during the celebrations, the President of Mpu Town Union Federated, Mr. Benjamin Chijioke, expressed the community’s gratitude and joy.
“Our happiness as the people of Mpu knows no bounds today. This is a great day for us. Since morning, every corner of the community has been filled with jubilations and tears of joy.
Many of us who depended on the Ekweremadus’ philanthropic activities have really missed them. Today, being Orie market day, the entire market was alive with celebrations,” Chijioke said.
He added, “We pray to God for Senator Ike Ekweremadu to also return home in good health. His absence has been a huge setback for the community. We miss them dearly, but we continue to trust God for a positive outcome.”
The councillor for Mpu Ward, Ogbuka Edwin, also shared his excitement, describing the day as akin to a public holiday in the community. “The news of her return brought cheer to everyone.
The absence of Senator Ekweremadu and his wife created a significant void in our community. However, today marks a turning point, and we are filled with hope and gratitude,” Edwin said.
He further stated, “We are committed to continuous prayers for the safe return of our leader, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.
His presence has always been a source of inspiration and support for Mpu. We believe in the power of God to make it happen.”
The Ekweremadus’ legal troubles began in 2023 when they, along with a co-defendant, Obinna Obeta, were convicted in the UK for their role in an organ trafficking plot.
While Mrs. Ekweremadu has now returned home, the community remains hopeful for the release of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, whose absence has been deeply felt.
For now, the residents of Mpu are celebrating Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return as a symbol of resilience and hope for better days ahead.
