The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) have announced the suspension of their seven-day warning strike, which began on October 26, 2024.
In a communiqué released after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday, JOHESU leaders confirmed the decision to suspend the strike, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Federal Government during a conciliation meeting at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja.
The communiqué, signed by JOHESU National Chairman Kabiru Minjibir and National Secretary Martin Egbanubi, stated that the Federal Government has six weeks to fulfill all obligations outlined in the MoU.
The statement read: “The NEC-in-Session, after extensive deliberations, resolved to suspend the seven-day warning strike effective from midnight, Thursday, 31st October, 2024, in the spirit of the MoU and in the public interest.”
It further stated, “An Expanded NEC meeting will be convened after the six-week deadline to assess progress. If the NEC is dissatisfied with the Federal Government’s response, an indefinite strike may be considered.”
The NEC also expressed appreciation to its members for their commitment and participation in the strike, urging continued dedication to achieving fair working conditions and social justice in the health sector.
