IWD: Tinubu, Wife, Akpabio, Reps felicitate Nigerian women

Following the celebration of International Women’s Day, President Bola Tinubu, Senate President, Godwill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, felicitated women across the country, describing them as the cornerstones of the nation.

The President in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, titled ‘President Tinubu celebrates Nigerian women, describes women as pivot of the nation.’

The 2024 IWD is themed; ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.’

He, however, acknowledged the role of women in nation-building, emphasising that, without a scintilla of doubt, Nigerian women are essential to the development, growth, and greatness of the nation.

In the same vein, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, in a statement through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, felicitated Nigerian women, saying, “We are very conscious that failure to invest in women is akin to killing development and destroying a nation.”

He said, “I wish to use the occasion of this year’s International Women’s Day to proudly celebrate our women—mothers and sisters. On behalf of my family, constituents, the Senate, and the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I sincerely wish our women a peaceful and fruitful celebration. I must say you are the best, and I sincerely appreciate you.”

On her part, the First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, said,  “This is the time to invest in women more than ever. Accelerating progress in any sphere requires that women have to be more involved.”

“Today, on International Women’s Day, I celebrate every woman—daughters, sisters, aunts, mothers, grandmothers, and also great-grandmothers, for their resilience, passion, and courage that have brought us thus far.

“That is why I see investing in women, not as charity, but as a strategy to build the future of our dear nation, Nigeria. Equipping you with education, resources, and opportunities to unleash your full potential, supporting your businesses, helping to dismantle economic barriers, and ensuring your voices are heard is a very crucial step.

Speaking further, she said, “Therefore, my question to all women is: What are you doing to help the other woman? How are you investing in her? Let us all come together, bond, and love one another. This is the pathway to accelerated progress. I charge all women; just pull a sister up, one at a time. You will be amazed at what we can achieve collectively.”

Also, the House of Representatives, in a statement, celebrated the invaluable contributions of women to the nation’s progress and development.

It reads, “This day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women in all spheres of life.

“The 10th Assembly of the House of Representatives is steadfast in its commitment to advancing the rights of women and promoting policies that enhance their well-being. Our legislative agenda includes measures aimed at addressing gender-based violence, promoting women’s participation in politics and decision-making, and ensuring equal opportunities for women in education, employment, and healthcare.”
