The ongoing crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) took an unexpected turn when Isaac Fayose, the brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, declared himself the new National Chairman of the party.
In a surprising announcement, Isaac Fayose declared the suspension of prominent party figures from both major factions, including former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Governor Nyesom Wike, his brother Ayo Fayose, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and other members of the G5 group.
“It’s official, I am now the new National Chairman of the PDP,” Isaac declared. He went on to say that the party’s current Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, had been suspended, instructing security personnel at Wadata House to take charge of the keys to the party’s secretariat.
“If you’re not happy, please don’t come to the secretariat to cause trouble. Instead, you can go to court,” Isaac stated. He added that, “The NWC members who have been suspended should return all PDP property they have with the security at Wadata.
“The G5 members have been suspended. Wike has been suspended. Fayose has been suspended. Governor Seyi Makinde has been suspended. Those involved in anti-party activities have been suspended, including Atiku because his ambition is causing us issues.”
Earlier, a faction within the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had suspended both Damagum and the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu. Additionally, the faction moved to suspend National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade.
However, a Federal High Court in Abuja stepped in, ruling that Damagum must remain the recorgnised Acting National Chairman. The court ordered that no other individual could take the position of PDP National Chairman until the party’s next national convention, scheduled for December 2024.
