Improve working conditions, salaries to curb brain drain – Australia-based Nigerian nurse tells FG

An Australia-based Nigerian nurse, Mrs Ibilola Okunola, has called on the Federal Government to improve the working conditions of medical practitioners in the country to tackle brain drain.

She stated that there is a need for the government to develop strategies such as having competitive salaries and creating professional development opportunities to reduce the increasing rate of professionals in the healthcare sector leaving the country.

She stated this in a statement made available to NATIONAL TELESCOPE on Wednesday.

It reads, “In a bid to address pressing healthcare challenges and curb the alarming brain drain in Nigeria’s healthcare industry,

“Ibilola Okunola, a registered and certified Nigerian Australian nurse, is stepping forward with valuable insights and proactive solutions.

“Ibilola, drawing on her extensive experience in both Nigerian and Australian healthcare systems, highlighted the need for strategic measures to enhance the quality of healthcare services in Nigeria.

“She emphasized the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructure, ensuring adequate training for medical professionals, and fostering a supportive work environment.

“One of the key issues discussed was the alarming brain drain that has been affecting Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Ibilola emphasized the importance of creating an environment that retains skilled healthcare professionals. She proposed initiatives such as improved working conditions, competitive salaries, and professional development opportunities to keep healthcare talents within the country.

“In addition to addressing immediate challenges, Ibilola is passionate about leveraging technology to enhance healthcare delivery. She stressed the potential of telehealth solutions and online training programs to reach underserved communities, especially in remote areas.
To further contribute to the cause, Ibilola announced her intention to collaborate with local healthcare organizations and government agencies to coach the new generation of nurses and healthcare professionals in the country.
