Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on the twenty-five Local Government Council Chairmen in the state to ensure the implementation of the new minimum wage for council workers, starting November 2024. He issued this directive during a meeting on Tuesday with the leadership of the Delta State chapters of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
The meeting was attended by prominent state officials, including the Auditor General (Local Government), Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief of Staff, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, and the Accountant-General of the State.
Governor Oborevwori remarked, “With the recent passage of the Local Government autonomy law, the responsibilities of councils have significantly increased. Nonetheless, I urge all council chairmen to prioritize the implementation of the new minimum wage for their workers.”
He further stressed the need for compliance with procurement laws in all council projects to ensure transparency and accountability. Additionally, the governor proposed organizing a retreat focused on enhancing financial management practices, encouraging the participation of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to educate council officials on proper financial protocols.
