Impeachment plot against Fubara won’t bring progress, PDP warns Rivers Assembly

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the move by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, calling it a threat to the state’s stability.

Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the Rivers PDP Chairman, Chief Nname Ewor, criticized the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly for escalating political tensions instead of fostering peace.

Ewor stated that the impeachment attempt was not in line with the Supreme Court’s directive to resolve the state’s political crisis.

“The lawmakers cannot, at this moment, contemplate impeachment when Governor Fubara and his team are busy implementing the Supreme Court judgment,” he said.

He questioned the motive behind the lawmakers’ actions, noting that the court had already granted them all the reliefs they requested.

Ewor urged Fubara to remain focused on governance and not be distracted by the impeachment threat. He also called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and rein in key political actors to prevent further escalation of the crisis.

“The war against Rivers State is state-sponsored, and we urge President Tinubu to advise his appointees to stop weaponizing federal agencies, including the judiciary. There is already enough insecurity in the country, and there is no point creating a new one in a peaceful Rivers State,” he said.

Ewor further warned that the continued withholding of federal revenue allocations to Rivers could lead to anarchy, as it would hinder salary payments to civil servants and pensioners, while crippling government operations.

He urged President Tinubu to use his executive powers to ensure the immediate release of the state’s funds, citing an example from the United States where President Donald Trump overruled a Supreme Court ruling on TikTok.

The PDP chairman also called on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and pro-Wike lawmakers to embrace peace, accept the re-presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill on March 19, and withdraw their impeachment notice against Fubara and his deputy.

“The impeachment notice is not part of the Supreme Court’s ruling, and the plot will not bring progress to Rivers State,” Ewor said.
