Imo Varsity ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Benefits, Salary Disparities

The Imo State University (IMSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on an indefinite strike due to longstanding unresolved issues. The strike, effective from Friday, September 20th, comes as a response to what the union describes as neglect by the university authorities.

In a joint statement signed by the Chairperson, Comrade Odinakachukwu Ejiogu, and Secretary, Comrade Lazarus Chikwendu, ASUU-IMSU made their position clear: “We are embarking on a total and comprehensive indefinite strike. This decision stems from several unresolved issues persisting for years.”

The union cited a range of grievances, including the failure to implement promotions with financial benefits since 2016, salary disparities between IMSU staff and their counterparts in other tertiary institutions, and delays in staff assessment and promotion. They also condemned the selective payment of salaries and the non-payment of salary arrears.

Among their other demands, the statement highlighted “non-payment of earned academic allowances since 2009, non-remittance of union check-off dues and welfare contributions from 2020-2021, and the non-remittance off pension deductions since May 2016.” Additionally, ASUU-IMSU called for the university’s inclusion in the Treasury Single Account (TSA) system, proper funding of the institution, and protection of its autonomy.

Despite multiple efforts to resolve these issues through letters, rallies, and meetings, the union stated that no concrete action had been taken by the university administration, governing council, or the state government. “We issued a 21-day ultimatum on July 18th, hoping the university would address these matters, but no solution has been forthcoming. We were left with no option but to proceed with an indefinite strike,” the union leaders said.

Comrade Ejiogu urged the public for support, noting that the strike is a fight for justice and the long-term improvement of the university. “We call on the public to understand and support our cause as we stand for justice, improved conditions, and a brighter future for the university.”

This indefinite strike is set to disrupt academic activities in IMSU, leaving students and stakeholders in uncertainty. Many now look to the university administration and the state FCU to swiftly address the demands and bring an end to the impasse.
