Imo former gov, Ihedioha resigns from PDP

By Chukwuma Okoro

The former governor of Imo State Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, has tendered his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a misalignment between his personal beliefs and the current direction of the party.

In a resignation letter addressed to the chairman of his constituency, Mbutu Ward in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Ihedioha expressed his unwavering commitment to promoting democracy and good governance in Nigeria despite his decision to part ways with the party.

As a longstanding member of the PDP since its inception in 1998, Ihedioha acknowledged his contributions to the party’s growth and evolution over the years.

He highlighted the PDP’s historical dedication to internal reforms and providing credible leadership, both in government and opposition.

However, Ihedioha lamented recent shifts within the party, noting its deviation from core principles and voiced concerns about the party’s failure to implement internal reforms, adhere to its own regulations, and effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In his letter, Ihedioha stated, “Since 1998, I have dedicated myself to the development and transformation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as one of its founding members. I have always believed in the party’s ability to enact internal reforms and provide credible leadership for Nigerians.

Unfortunately, recent developments have diverged from these principles.”

He continued, “Despite my efforts to provide guidance, the party has strayed from its core values. It is with regret that I announce my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party, effective immediately. While this decision was not easy, I believe it is necessary. However, I remain committed to contributing to the advancement of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”

Ihedioha affirmed his continued availability to serve in the interest of deepening democracy and fostering good governance in the country, signaling his ongoing commitment to public service despite his departure from the PDP.

Recall that Emeka Ihediiha served as Nigeria’s House of Representatives deputy Speaker between 2011 and 2015 and was governor of Imo State between 2019 and 2020 until he was removed by the historic Supreme Court judgement that brought fourth place winner Hope Uzodinma to replace him.
