The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has appointed Comrade Michael Ikeogwu, the former Chairman of the Delta State Council, to lead a nine-member Credentials Committee responsible for overseeing the upcoming National Election Congress.

This significant appointment was made during a virtual NEC meeting, chaired by the Union’s National President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, MFR.

Ikeogwu’s selection, praised for his administrative skills and versatility, has garnered widespread approval among veteran journalists.

Comrade Godwin Okoh, a respected figure in journalism, endorsed the decision, highlighting Ikeogwu’s successful tenure as Chairman of the Delta State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and his pivotal role in organising the previous National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) elections.

Okoh expressed confidence that Ikeogwu is the ideal candidate to lead a transparent and credible electoral process for the NUJ.

Supporting Ikeogwu in this critical task, Comrade Ademu Seidu has been appointed as the Secretary of the Credentials Committee.

Other members of the committee include Comrades Peculiar John, Tukur Hassan Dan-Ali, Prince Leke Adegbite, Chidi Asonye, Ayuku Pwaspo, Rajab Mohammed, and Dominic Akpan.

Their collective mandate is to ensure a fair and transparent election process that will lead to the formation of the next Central Working Committee.

The NEC meeting also addressed several other key issues, including extending payment deadlines for state councils’ professional fees and dues. Also, dates for the Triennial Delegates Conference were set for November 28-30, 2024, in Owerri, Imo State.

Moreover, the NEC expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, urging the government to address critical national concerns, particularly those affecting Nigerian workers and the broader economy.

The NEC also condemned the recent violence during nationwide hunger protests and criticised the unprofessional conduct of security personnel.

The council called on President Tinubu to address these issues promptly and urged state governments to implement the new minimum wage law without delay.
