The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of jungle justice across Nigeria.
He has mandated the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department to investigate these cases and ensure that all perpetrators face justice.
In a statement, police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi highlighted a disturbing incident in Edo State on October 13, where a mob attacked a police station, resulting in the death of several suspects.
The community accused the police of trying to manipulate justice after the arrest of suspected kidnappers and robbers.
This led to a violent backlash, including the burning of the police station and vehicles.
Adejobi stressed the dangers of jungle justice, warning that it undermines the rule of law and damages Nigeria’s global reputation.
He clarified that the police’s actions were based on thorough investigations, and the community’s fears were unfounded.
Another recent incident occurred in Agege, Lagos, on October 19, where a police officer, ASP Augustine Osupayi, was killed while trying to protect a driver who had accidentally knocked down a motorcyclist.
The police were overwhelmed by a mob seeking vengeance.
The IGP extended condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated the commitment to hold accountable those responsible for these violent acts.
He urged the public to trust the police in delivering justice rather than resorting to mob actions.
