Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has directed the Commissioner for Health, Professor Augustine Umoh, to establish a team for a comprehensive review of the Ibom Specialist Hospital.
This move aims to ensure the optimal use of the premium medical facility, aligning with the original objectives set during its establishment and commissioning in 2015.
The hospital, located at Ekid Itam on Ikot Ekpene Road in Uyo, is a quaternary health facility designed to provide specialised medical services to the people of Akwa Ibom State.
Despite its potential, the state government believes the hospital’s full capabilities have not been utilized.
During a meeting with key stakeholders at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Uyo, Governor Eno expressed concern over the underutilisation of the hospital.
He announced that the Ibom Specialist Hospital would henceforth operate as a Limited Liability Company, which he believes will improve its efficiency and service delivery.
Governor Eno stated, “I recently directed the Commissioner for Health to form a team for a comprehensive review of the Ibom Specialist Hospital.
“We need to understand everything that is not working with the hospital to optimise its use and improve the services it offers.”
Furthermore, Governor Eno highlighted the state’s efforts to enhance healthcare access through the construction of modern primary health centers.
This initiative, part of the “one project per local government” policy, aims to bring healthcare closer to the people.
The Governor noted that the construction of a new General Hospital in Ukanafun is nearing completion, with plans for more general hospitals across the state.
In addition to infrastructure, the Governor declared the establishment of a Health Insurance Board. This board is intended to facilitate access to affordable healthcare for residents through a health insurance scheme.
“We have provided medical outreaches to assist our people as much as possible. We are working diligently to ensure our hospitals are well-equipped,” Governor Eno assured.
The Governor’s administration is committed to advancing the health sector in Akwa Ibom State.
