Ibas Sworn In as Rivers Administrator Amid State of Emergency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sworn in Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State.

This move comes on the heels of Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly .

The ceremony, which took place at the State House in Abuja, marked the beginning of Ibas’s six-month tenure as administrator.

Tinubu’s decision to appoint Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, has been seen as a strategic move to restore order and stability in the state.

Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency was prompted by the growing political crisis and security concerns in Rivers State.

The president cited the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex, the failure of the governor to rebuild it, and the rising threat of militancy and pipeline vandalism as reasons for his decision.

As Ibas takes the reins, he will be tasked with overseeing the state’s affairs, proposing regulations, and working closely with the Federal Executive Council.

The move has been met with mixed reactions, with some hailing it as a necessary step to restore order, while others have expressed concerns about the implications for democracy and the rule of law.
