I Appointed 50 Aides as Reward – Unical first female SUG President

By Olumide Olusegun

The first female President of the Student Union Government (SUG) at the University of Calabar, Blessing Alims, has defended her decision to appoint 50 students as aides, amidst growing controversy.

Alims explained that the appointments were a gesture of appreciation towards students who supported her campaign and demonstrated unwavering commitment to her emergence as SUG President.

Speaking to NATIONAL TELESCOPE, Alims clarified, “People need to understand that in student unionism, appointments aren’t about monetary gains. These appointments are primarily about recognising those who stood by you, sacrificed their time, and worked tirelessly to help you achieve your goals.”

Alims emphasised that appointing a larger team of aides is necessary in an institution with over 30,000 students.

“As a president, how do you effectively manage your duties with just five aides? The liaison officers, for instance, are key representatives from different faculties, ensuring smooth communication and coordination across the university.”

She further explained that these appointees are not financially compensated but are involved in voluntary service while gaining valuable skills.

“These are organized individuals who are voluntarily offering their service without any expectation of payment. It’s an opportunity for them to learn, grow, and contribute.”

Addressing concerns about the cost of governance, Alims noted that the appointments do not impose any financial burden.

“It’s not constitutionally required to pay these appointees, so it doesn’t add any extra costs. They simply help in managing responsibilities effectively, ensuring things run smoothly even when I’m not physically present.”

Alims concluded by stating that her team’s structure allows her to stay informed and engaged with campus activities, even from a distance.

“Their feedback makes it feel like I am right there, monitoring everything as it unfolds.”
