Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has expressed his willingness to collaborate with other candidates who share his vision for Nigeria’s development.
Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, made this known through a series of posts on his official X handle on Saturday.
Obi clarified that he is not driven by personal ambition to become president or to hold any particular office.
Instead, his focus is on Nigeria’s advancement and tackling the nation’s pressing issues, including hunger, poverty, and insecurity.
Reacting to what he described as a misinterpretation of his recent television interview, Obi accused certain individuals of deliberately distorting his words for propaganda purposes.
He emphasised that he does not want to be preoccupied with the 2027 elections while Nigeria continues to face serious challenges.
“I have received numerous calls and concerns about my interview with News Central TV,” Obi said. “In that interview, I used the opportunity to clarify my position. Unfortunately, some people have twisted my words for their own agenda.”
He continued, “I made it clear that I am open to working with others, provided their goals align with genuine progress for Nigeria and are not about capturing power for personal gain. My commitment is to collaborate with those who are dedicated to moving Nigeria forward.”
Obi reaffirmed his dedication to the Labour Party and his goal of addressing educational disparities.
“I remain committed to the Labour Party and to efforts that will bring millions of out-of-school children back into the education system,” he said.
“Any partnership must be transparent about its intentions. When the time comes for 2027, my decision to run for office will be based on a commitment to genuine progress, not on power-seeking motives.”
He further clarified that he never suggested any intention to become a vice president to another candidate.
“My position has always been clear, I am open to collaborating with those who are genuinely committed to building a new Nigeria.
My dedication to Nigeria’s progress remains strong, and I believe it is possible to contribute significantly without holding a specific office.”
Obi’s statements underscore his focus on Nigeria’s development and his readiness to work with like-minded individuals to address the country’s critical issues.
