How to adopt Biotechnology for poverty alleviation – PCU Don

The Director of Biotechnology, Precious Cornerstone University, Ibadan has said that Biotechnology application can be used to make impact in the community.

He said embracing biotechnological innovations can help to elevate poverty and provide tools for easy livelihood.

Prof. Charles Adetunji said this at the 3rd Recent Advances in Biotechnology Conference and Workshop (RAIB-2023) held at the Precious Cornerstone University, (PCU), Ibadan on Wednesday.

In his short presentation address, the Director of Biotechnology Precious Cornerstone University, Prof. Charles Adetunji, in his lecture titled ” Recent Advances” spoke on ways to make impact and monetize this Biotechnology into wealth creation. As the theme of the conference is “Next-Generation Biotechnological Techniques: A tool in achieving the SDG goals.”

He said, “we need to think of something to develop. There must be a product that can generate wealth. The economy of Nigeria is not sustainable, we are not having science breakthrough because we have not leverage on the Technology that we have and this is already available within us. When the Industry and Technology come together, there will be a breakthrough. Many have leverage on the factor that when we have a research insight we call on Industrialist, researcher, policy makers, economist and engineers at the inception of the fertilization of the project before we start.

According to him, self development goal is key to achieving success in life.”

He urged the participants to capitalize on the transitional research for a new technology adding that a life of impact must solve problems. If it’s one problem it can solve, they should capitalize on it.

He equally appealed to the Federal Government to support the educational systems and develop the technology system in a significant and transformational way to be able feed the growing global population.

He charged them to be problem solvers in their various communities and through this medium the Gdp of Nigeria will change.

Prof. Charles during the pre press conference explained why some key speakers will not be available as a result of the visa procurement from Nigeria.

In his opening remark, the ex VC of the Institution, Prof Oloke emphasized on the importance of the conference as a tool to technology breakthrough.

“He said, ” Recent Advances in Bio technology is an important event. We know what The Technology role play in shaping the world. There are different problems in the world, like climate change and this brings a devastating harm to the world. The introduction of Biotechnology will make sure that we moderate what we are doing that is destroying the world. It is the Biotechnologist that will propose a definite solution. It only requires that we accept what is been suggested”, he added.

He used the occasion to introduce and recognize the incoming Vice- Chancellor, Prof.Timothy Adejumo and the incoming Registrar, Pastor Mrs Afolabi, and the Director General, Attanda Lawal, Nihort Ibadan.

The four days conference which will be held between December 5 – 8, 2023 had scientists from various tertiary institutions in attendance.

Participants in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology fields from all over Nigeria and outside the country attended the conference.
