How Onwenu’s Song Calls for Unity, Farewell to the Saints – Jimitota

By Chuks Peter, DELTA |

Veteran journalist and assistant news editor of the Vanguard newspaper, Comrade Jimitota Onoyume, also known as JP, “Journalist for the Poor,” recently shared his thoughts on the nation’s grief over the loss of several revered figures.

He expressed his sentiments from Warri, Delta State, on Wednesday morning.

Jimitota (JP) noted, “For the past three weeks, Nigeria as a nation has mourned the loss of several revered figures.

“First, it was my dear aunt, a centenarian from the Onoyume family of Okpara, Delta State.

“Then, we lost Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, a devout Catholic from Anambra State. Now, the nation grieves for the beloved Onyeka Onwenu.”

Reflecting on Onyeka’s legacy, he highlighted her final message, which was a heartfelt plea for unity: “One love keeps us together.”

Onyeka’s words, deeply relevant to contemporary Nigeria, urged the ruling class to allow the poor to breathe and live with dignity.

She passionately called for the end of hoarding government-released palliatives by the wealthy and condemned the black market trading of dollars by top executives, actions that she believed crippled the economy for selfish gain.

Onyeka’s message extended beyond the elite, addressing the common man as well. “Let love lead,” she urged, calling on the poor not to turn against their fellow citizens struggling to make ends meet.

She emphasised the need for solidarity and compassion among all Nigerians.

In a poetic expression of grief, Jimitota echoed the words of former Minister Dr. Chris Ngige: “It is raining and pouring, and as the Igbos say to death, ‘Onwuzilulikenu’ (death, go and rest), ‘Onwuemeliego’ (death has won), and ‘Onwubikonu’ (death, please take it easy).”

Jimitota concluded his reflection with a poignant farewell to Onyeka Onwenu, saying, “Farewell, Onyeka Onwenu. May your legacy of love and unity endure.”

His words captured the nation’s sorrow and longing for unity amidst the loss of such significant figures.
