A fresh wave of insecurity hit Delta State as the newly appointed Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Agbarho Division, CSP Jega, was killed by suspected kidnappers during a rescue mission.
The tragic incident happened around 1 am on Monday, barely two days after CSP Jega resumed duty at the Agbarho Divisional Command.
Sources revealed that CSP Jega, alongside the DPO of Orerokpe Division, CSP Paul, led a team of police officers to rescue a kidnapped victim.
However, their mission was met with a brutal ambush near the Agbarho rail station by a group of kidnappers who opened fire on the security personnel.
In the ensuing gun battle, CSP Jega and some policemen lost their lives. CSP Paul narrowly escaped death and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where medical professionals are working to save him.
Reacting to the tragic news, Israel Joe, a well-known Warri-based activist, expressed deep sorrow and shock.
“This is devastating news. Just yesterday, I had a conversation with the late DPO regarding the conduct of his officers. He swiftly addressed a situation where his men demanded money from a citizen, showing his commitment to integrity and professionalism. Now, hearing of his death in such a manner is heartbreaking,” Joe stated.
He added, “I extend my deepest condolences to the Nigeria Police Force, Delta State Command, and the families of the officers who lost their lives while serving the nation. These heartless criminals should face the full wrath of the law.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident.
“They were ambushed. Unfortunately, we lost the DPO,” Edafe said.
The Delta State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, vowing to bring the culprits to justice.
