How I resisted admission corruption to protect integrity – Ex-Unilorin Deputy Registrar

An 84-year-old former Deputy Registrar of Academics at the University of Ilorin, Peter Abioye has revealed how he stood firm against parents, including friends, who attempted to compromise his integrity to secure university admissions for their children.

In an interview, Abioye recounted the challenges he faced during his tenure, noting the immense pressure from desperate parents seeking to bypass due process.

“One of the major challenges I faced was dealing with parents who were desperate to secure university admission for their wards at all costs, even if it meant compromising values,” he said.

Despite the pressures, Abioye maintained his principles.

“My principles didn’t align with that, and while many, including friends, might have felt offended, I stood firm. I was raised in a family that instilled the belief that a good name is better than abundant riches,”* he explained, adding that he passed these values on to his children.

As a disciplinarian and advocate for education, Abioye emphasizmsed the importance of instilling strong values in children.

“I believed and still believe so much in education, which I consider the best gift a man can give to his children,” he said.

Balancing his demanding career with family responsibilities was not without its challenges, but he credited his success to the support of his wife.

“I had challenging moments, especially because of the gruelling hours of work during certain seasons, but with the support of my other half, it was well managed,” he noted.

Abioye’s story serves as a testament to the value of integrity and the enduring legacy of principled leadership.
