Amid rising economic challenges, a trend has emerged where some Nigerian men are requesting marriage lists from multiple families to assess the costs before making a choice.
Traditionally, marriage lists outline the financial expectations placed on a groom, including dowries, gifts, and ceremonial expenses.
However, economic pressures are pushing some men to compare these lists in search of the most affordable option.
One man explained, “It’s not that I don’t want to marry for love, but the costs are overwhelming.
By comparing lists, I can make a decision that won’t lead to financial ruin.”
Marriage in Nigeria often involves significant financial commitments that extend beyond the couple, with family expectations adding pressure on grooms.
While the practice of “shopping” for marriage lists is practical to some, critics argue it could diminish the values of respect and love in relationships.
Relationship expert Dr. Chika Afolabi stated, “Reducing marriage to a financial comparison risks turning what should be a sacred union into a transaction. The essence of marriage is commitment and love, not just affordability.”
With the cost of living rising, many grooms feel compelled to make financially sound decisions, yet some worry this could shift focus away from emotional compatibility.
“I don’t want my marriage to be all about money,” another man remarked, “but these are tough times. I have to be smart.”
As this trend grows, Nigerians are left to ponder the balance between financial stability and the core values that make marriage fulfilling.
