Housing Shortage: Estate Agents Calls For Govts Partnership

By Chuks Peter, DELTA

The Association of Estate Agents of Nigeria (AEAN),

Delta State Chapter has called on both the federal and state governments to partner with real

estate developers to address housing shortages in the country.

The State Chairman of AEAN, Comrade Oyibo Oke, made the call while on a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Area, Hon. Anthony Ofoni.

Comrade Oke, who lamented the acute shortage of housing in the country which has given rise to the  high cost of renting an apartment, stressed the need for urgent intervention in the sector.

The estate agent chairman expressed the association’s commitment to maintaining high industry standards and providing required professional training for its members, decrying the prevalence of unprofessional agents who undermine public trust in the real estate industry.

According to Oke Oyibo, “Over the years in Nigeria, a real estate profession has been bastardized by unprofessional agents, who disguise as real estate agents to defraud clients of their earned resources with no hope of recovering their money back; this has given the public a poor perception of estate agents and its noble profession.

“Therefore, in a bid to reverse this ugly trend/perception and to curtail these fraudulent activities, the Nigeria Institute of Estate Surveyor and Valuer established AEAN in 2013 to ensure the real estate industry standards are upheld and members are regularly trained on basic techniques to enhance the growth of their businesses such that the public/parties and stakeholder will be satisfied.

“Real estate plays a critical role in the development of any SON and guides the companies from raw materials to finished products. officials call, with their wealth of knowledge and experience in industries, visit the companies, go through their processes and personnel, observe issue recommendations, write feedback, and follow up with routine visits to ensure companies don’t fall into laxity in product quality. Companies which are consistent in adhering to standards are finally certified and are given the prerogative to display the SON logo on their products,

hence the reason why we are all gathered here.”
