Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has announced a 24-hour curfew in response to escalating violence during protests against economic hardship.
The decision was communicated in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, on Thursday.
This is as hoodlums looted the newly built Nigeria Communication Commission Industrial Park in Kano.
Images and videos circulating online show the building set ablaze, with valuable equipment such as computers, furniture, and electronics being stolen.
The curfew follows an Emergency State Security Council meeting convened to address the rising violence and disruptions.
According to the statement, the curfew is aimed at safeguarding lives and protecting both public and private property amidst the unrest.
Tofa stated, “The imposition of this curfew is a necessary measure to restore order and ensure the safety of our communities. It is paramount that we protect our citizens from further harm and preserve the sanctity of our state’s institutions and businesses.”
Governor Yusuf called for unity and vigilance among citizens during this challenging time, urging them not to be divided by the actions of a few individuals.
He emphasised, “Together, we can navigate these challenges and fortify our resolve to build a stronger, more resilient Kano State.”
The statement also indicated that all security agencies in the state have been instructed to enforce the curfew strictly. Citizens are urged to comply with the directive for their safety and the well-being of the community.
