Habeeb Akeem Triumphs in 7th Kwara Open Golf Tournament

Habeeb Akeem of Ilorin Golf Club emerged victorious in the 7th Kwara Open Golf Championship, securing the win with a Gross score of +2, 146 over 36 holes.

Akeem, a standout player discovered during the National Youth Games, started the tournament strong with a -2, 70 on Saturday.

He maintained his lead on a tense Sunday afternoon, finishing with a +4, 76 to clinch the title. H

e faced stiff competition from Oluwatoba Segun of Ikoyi Golf Club and Sikiru Jimoh of Mic-com Golf Club Ada, who both finished with a Gross of +7, 151, securing second and third places, respectively.

The event, which featured over 140 participants, saw notable performances across various categories.

Idowu Oladele of Ikeja Golf Club won the best Net prize with a score of 141, narrowly beating Jamiu Muhammed of Ilorin Golf Club, who also finished with 141 but lost due to the countback rule.

Kunle Ademokoya of Ilorin Golf Club followed closely in third place with a Net score of 142.

In the Handicap 13-28 category, Olaitan Shabi of Sagamu Golf Club claimed the top prize with a Net score of -7, 137.

He was followed by Moshood Shiru of Ilorin Golf Club with 140 Net and Muhammed Ibrahim, also of Ilorin Golf Club, who finished third with a score of 141.

Other winners included Justice Lambo Akanbi (Rtd) of Ilorin Golf Club, who took the BOT category with a Net score of 82 over 18 holes.

The Men’s Veteran title went to Alaba Yahaya of Ilorin Golf Club, while the Super Veterans category was won by Dibu Ojerinde, also of Ilorin Golf Club.

In the women’s categories, Mary Onyejose of Tiger Golf Club Ibadan won the Best Gross Ladies, with Amaka Roberts of Sagamu Golf Club finishing second and Victoria Abiodun of Ilorin Golf Club winning the Best Net Ladies prize.

In his speech, the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting golf and sports development in the state.

Represented by the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bola Magaji, the Governor highlighted the state’s ongoing support, including for the upcoming Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN) Western Zone Open tournament, scheduled for August 15-17 at the Ilorin Golf Course.

This tournament is expected to attract the country’s best female golfers, under the sanction of the Royal and Ancient Club of St. Andrews, the world governing body for golf.
