Yobe State has been plunged into mourning following the killing of two police officers by gunmen in separate attacks.

The incidents, which occurred in Fune Local Government Area in Yobe state , have left the police force and residents of the state in shock.

According to eyewitnesses, the first attack occurred on Sunday, February 9, when a group of gunmen ambushed a police patrol team at Kolere Police Out-Post.

The officer in charge of the Out-Post, DSP Jantuku Philibus, was killed in the attack, while another officer was injured.

In a similar incident, DSP Ali Pindar, a police officer attached to the same Out-Post, was killed by a gang of armed robbers in late January 2025.

DSP Pindar had arrested a high-profile gang leader in the community and transferred the suspect to Damagum Divisional Police Headquarters in Fune LGA.

However, the suspect was later arraigned and granted bail, and upon his return, he organised a gang of armed robbers who attacked and killed the police officer.

The Yobe State Police Command has confirmed the incidents, stating that the two officers were overwhelmed by the suspects and their gang when they attempted to arrest them.

The command has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and has launched a manhunt for the suspects.

The killing of the two police officers has raised concerns about the safety of security personnel in the state.

The Yobe State Government has condemned the attacks, describing them as “cowardly and senseless”.

The government has pledged to support the families of the slain officers and to work with the police to ensure that justice is served.
