Four soldiers and one civilian have been killed by a group of rampaging hoodlums in Anambra State on Wednesday
The hoodlums operating in a Sienna bus attacked the soldiers at a checkpoint opposite Zenith Bank in Umunze, Orumba South local government area of the State.
However, when contacted, spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, stated that there was a sporadic shooting in Umunze but said he could not confirm the casualty figure in the attack.
He also stated that he could not speak on the alleged killing of the four soldiers.
Tochukwu, however, said that the Police Command had deployed its team of operatives to the affected area to provide security to the residents.
“I can confirm that there was sporadic shooting at Umunze today between 12 and 1.30pm today but I can’t confirm the casualty figure for now. Concerning the issue of whether soldiers were killed or not, I can’t speak for the military,” the police spokesman said.
Meanwhile, LEADERSHIP learnt that residents of Umunze and the neighbouring communities including Umuchukwu, Ezira, and others, have been enveloped by fear of a possible invasion of soldiers on a revenge mission.
