The Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. George Chima, has been kidnapped by suspected gunmen in Imo State.
Chima was reportedly abducted on Friday from his Okigwe residence while hosting some lecturers from Abia State University, Uturu.
According to a family source, four armed men stormed the house, harassed his visitors, and seized him.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Imo State, DSP Henry Okoye, said the police are actively pursuing the kidnappers.
“Yes, we are aware of the kidnapping of Prof. George Chima, and we have already commenced investigations,” Okoye told our correspondent.
“The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has personally led a team of officers to Okigwe to trace the perpetrators.”
The police have assured that efforts are underway to secure the safe release of the ABSIEC chairman and apprehend the kidnappers.
