Group Drags Mobil To Court Over Environmental Pollution, Damage

An environment justice and accountability group, Network Advancement Program For Poverty, Disaster And Risk Reduction, NAPPDRR, has dragged Mobil Producing Nigeria Ultd to Federal High Court 1 in Uyo judicial division over severe oil spill, environmental pollution and climate change around the oil and gas host communities in Akwa Ibom state.

In suit number, FHC/CS/UY/156/2017/, the group demands special and general damages for environmental degradation from oil spill from Mobil Producing Nigeria, to the tune of 20 billion naira.

With operational base in Esit Eket Local Government area, the group is a member of Global Network of Civil Society Organization for accountability, environmental climate and social justice in the polluted and degraded oil and gas host communities of the Niger Delta Region.

Mobil Producing Nigeria Unltd, through their counsel, has filed a preliminary objection to the suit, while the counsel to the claimants has filed a report to the preliminary objection to discountenance and dismiss the preliminary objection as lacking merit.

Meanwhile, the case is adjourned to 7th May for settlement or hearing.
