Governor Engr Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has taken a more conciliatory approach towards the state’s civil servants.
After protests from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) over various demands, including salary deductions, pension allowances, and palliatives, the governor had initially expressed annoyance and ordered the protests to be dispersed.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Governor Makinde apologized to the labour leaders, who reciprocated the gesture.
He acknowledged that the protest was unnecessary and promised to have regular meetings with the labour unions to prevent future misunderstandings.
During his appearance at the protest ground, he emphasized that the state belongs to everyone, and cooperation and support are vital for progress.
The NLC and TUC leaders appreciated the governor’s efforts for workers’ welfare and expressed confidence that their demands would be addressed.
Some critics, including the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and a lawyer, criticized the governor’s initial directive to disperse the protests, asserting that peaceful rallies are within the workers’ rights.
Governor Makinde’s change of approach and willingness to engage with the labour unions may signal a positive step towards resolving the issues raised by the workers in Oyo State.
