Gov Yusuf Named NUJ Grandpatron, Lauded for Transforming Health, Education Sectors

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been recognised for his significant contributions to health and education as he was conferred with the title of Grand Patron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

The honour was bestowed by the National President of the NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, during a visit to Kano on Sunday.

Comrade Chris, along with his deputy, Comrade Alasan Yahaya, commended Governor Yusuf for his impactful governance, especially in the areas of educational reform and healthcare improvement. He also introduced the newly elected leadership of the NUJ Kano chapter.

Speaking at the event, Comrade Chris praised the governor’s efforts, particularly in education.

“Your Excellency, if the teachers say you are the best, we should all take that as a true reflection of your performance. Usually, teachers take to the streets with placards to demand their rights, but in your case, they have commended your efforts in reforming the education sector,” he said.

Governor Yusuf’s achievements in education have been widely recognised, including his recent title as the “Most Teacher-Friendly Governor of the Year” by the Nigeria Union of Teachers.

Additionally, he received a Fellowship from the United States Institute of Management and Leadership for his commitment to good governance.

Comrade Chris also highlighted the evolving role of journalism in Nigeria, emphasising a shift towards development journalism. “We now acknowledge good governance while pointing out areas that need improvement for the common good,” he stated. He encouraged the governor to continue his outstanding work in health and education.

The NUJ President further urged Governor Yusuf to support the upcoming National Council of Women Journalists election, scheduled to take place in Kano this November. He also requested the renovation of the Kano Press Centre to bring it up to modern standards.

In addition, Comrade Chris appealed to the governor to prioritise foreign training opportunities for Kano-based journalists, noting, “The world is becoming a global village, and our journalists need exposure to international standards and practices.”

In response, Governor Yusuf expressed his appreciation for the honour and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the media.

“We hold the media in very high regard, and our relationship with journalists in Kano and beyond is excellent,” he said.

“I am honoured to accept the role of Grand Patron of the NUJ in Kano, and I pledge to provide all necessary support to the union.”

He assured the NUJ of his administration’s continuous partnership in promoting responsible journalism, adding, “Our administration will always support the media to fulfill its social responsibilities while ensuring that our people are informed and empowered.”
