Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the long-awaited promotion of staff at Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic (formerly Abia State Polytechnic), ending a decade-long embargo on career advancement in the institution.
The governor’s approval marks a major breakthrough for polytechnic workers who had endured years of stagnation.
Beyond lifting the embargo, Governor Otti went further by abolishing the controversial practice of notional promotions, ensuring that all promotions are now fully recognized and effective.
News of the governor’s directive sent waves of excitement through the institution as jubilant staff members celebrated the long-overdue development.
The Polytechnic’s Rector, Dr. Christopher K. Okoro, who broke the news to the workers, described the move as a testament to Governor Otti’s commitment to workers’ welfare and institutional growth.
The polytechnic staff expressed deep gratitude to the governor, acknowledging his dedication to resolving their longstanding grievances.
They praised him for fulfilling his earlier promise of clearing the 33 months’ salary arrears inherited from the previous administration and for ensuring the prompt payment of salaries since assuming office.
“This is a new dawn for us. For the first time in over a decade, we are experiencing true leadership that values the sacrifices of workers. Governor Otti has restored our dignity,” one staff member remarked.
Governor Otti’s administration has prioritised education sector reforms, not just in terms of staff welfare but also in infrastructure development.
His government has initiated several projects to upgrade the polytechnic’s facilities, aligning them with modern academic standards.
The latest decision is expected to boost staff morale, improve productivity, and enhance the overall learning environment in the institution.
Observers believe that with motivated lecturers and an improved infrastructure base, the polytechnic is poised to reclaim its status as a leading technical institution in Nigeria.
Stakeholders in the education sector have lauded Governor Otti for his proactive approach, noting that his actions set a positive precedent for other institutions in the state.
Many believe that this move will strengthen the state’s human capital development and position its graduates for greater opportunities.
As the reforms take shape, expectations are high that Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic will witness a new era of excellence, driven by a well-motivated workforce and visionary leadership.
