Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has praised the state’s youths for their decision to abstain from the nationwide protest, thereby preserving the peace and stability of the region.
In recognition of their commendable conduct, the Governor announced plans to launch a social welfare Programme aimed at providing monthly support to approximately 5,000 youths across the state.
This initiative was revealed during the August edition of the Monthly Covenant Service at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo, an event themed “But They Shall Proceed No Further.”
Governor Eno expressed gratitude to Akwa Ibom youths for resisting the urge to join the protest, which had led to violent clashes in other states.
He encouraged them to maintain this peaceful approach throughout the ten-day protest period.
“The Akwa Ibom youths have done exceptionally well,” the Governor stated.
“I am immensely proud of their decision to keep our state safe. Their choice to refrain from participating in the protest, not due to police intervention but through their own decision, has been truly commendable.
“We can achieve our goals through dialogue and unity, and I am grateful for their understanding and cooperation.”
The Governor outlined that the new social support programme would be introduced in October 2024 and would cover all local government areas.
The programme is designed to assist unemployed youths, providing them with financial support and opportunities to contribute positively to the state’s development.
Similarly, Governor Eno commended the peaceful conduct of the recent Ward Congresses held across the state.
He announced a postponement of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Councillorship primaries, originally scheduled for August 2, to August 3, 2024.
The Chairmanship primaries have been rescheduled for Monday. This adjustment, according to the Governor, will allow the party to finalise preparations ensuring internal democracy and the selection of credible candidates for the upcoming elections.
Governor Eno also emphasised the importance of female participation in politics, urging women to support female candidates and planned for at least four women to be selected as councillorship candidates in each local government area.
In his sermon, Reverend Godwin Amaowoh, General Secretary of Assemblies of God, Nigeria, encouraged the people to remain steadfast and resist the negative influences of the current times, affirming that Akwa Ibom’s faith in God and its leadership will guide it through challenges.
