Ghana begins probe over Nigerian Boxer’s death

Ghana’s Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, has initiated an investigation into the death of Nigerian boxer Segun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a match in Accra.

The probe aims to determine if standard boxing protocols were followed and if necessary medical measures were in place.

This move comes after allegations of negligence were leveled against the Ghana Boxing Authority by the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control.

The incident occurred on March 29 at the Bukom Boxing Arena, where Olanrewaju was competing against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu.

The Nigerian boxer collapsed during the bout and was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The sudden and tragic turn of events has sparked outrage and demands for answers.

According to Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, the Ghana Boxing Authority failed to adhere to standard boxing protocols, which may have contributed to Olanrewaju’s death.

Aboderin’s allegations have prompted Minister Adams to launch a thorough investigation into the matter.

Minister Adams has assured the public that the investigation will be transparent and thorough, with a focus on determining whether all necessary protocols were followed.

“It is only through an investigation that we can determine if all the protocols that need to be sanctioned for a fight were followed and if all the ringside protocols were also followed — if paramedics were available,” Adams stated.

The investigation is expected to provide answers to the questions surrounding Olanrewaju’s tragic death.

The Nigerian boxer had a professional record of 24 fights, with 13 wins, eight losses, and three draws.

He was also a former West African and national light-heavyweight champion.

The outcome of the investigation will be eagerly awaited by the boxing community and the family of the late boxer.
