The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, has emphasized the vital role of bilingualism, particularly in French, for enhancing job prospects, research development, and collaborative efforts.

In a statement by the institutions Directorate of Communication, the VC stated this while speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the French Embassy and the French Unit of the Department of European Studies.

Professor Adebowale described French as an essential second language in Nigeria, given its inclusion in the academic curriculum at both secondary and tertiary levels.

He noted the longstanding strategic partnership between the University and France, facilitated by the Institute of French Research in Africa (IFRA), which promotes student and staff exchanges as well as cultural collaboration.

He highlighted that the French Village in Badagry is currently managed by a faculty member from the university’s French Unit.

Advocating for expanded sensitization programs that go beyond language to encompass cultural exchange, Professor Adebowale urged the Department of European Studies to introduce proficiency courses in French to enhance communication and collaboration with France.

He committed to further strengthening the university’s partnerships with the French Embassy.

Team leader Ms. Losange Magaly, the French Embassy Attaché for French language, along with Dr. Chloe Pellegrini, expressed appreciation for the university’s commitment to promoting French.

Magaly outlined plans for a concrete collaborative framework aimed at fostering deeper ties between Nigeria and France.

Highlighting the mutual goal of enhancing youth opportunities, Magaly encouraged Nigerian students in non-French disciplines to embrace the language, thereby expanding their employability in France.

She announced a forthcoming job fair in November, designed to connect employers, candidates, and universities, focusing on improving French education and student training.

The collaboration between the University of Ibadan and the French Embassy promises significant benefits for both nations, fostering opportunities for Nigerian students and strengthening educational ties.
