Four Killed in Communal Clash Over Land Dispute in Ondo

Four people have been confirmed dead following a violent clash between the Akure and Idanre communities in Ondo State, stemming from a long-standing land dispute.

The bodies were discovered in Gbalegi, the contested area between the two communities.

The tragic incident occurred after a similar clash last week in the Akoko Southwest Local Government Area, where youths from the Ebo, Owaki, and Oke-Odo communities clashed over a boundary issue, resulting in the deaths of two people.

The Ondo State Police Command, through its spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the Gbalegi incident and revealed that the police had recovered seven single-barrel guns and a large cache of arms.

She explained that armed thugs had mobilized to the Gbalegi area, launching violent attacks on the residents.

“Upon receiving reports, the Police swiftly responded and arrested seven individuals who were found in possession of charms, seven single-barrel guns, and a substantial amount of live ammunition along with expended ones.

Further investigation led police to nearby bush areas where four bodies were discovered, all with bullet wounds,” Odunlami said.

The Commissioner of Police has called for caution in handling boundary disputes, urging communities involved in land conflicts to seek legal resolutions in court rather than resorting to violence.
