Floods Claim 20 Lives and Displace 2,000 in Yobe

Twenty people have died and 2,000 have been displaced due to severe flooding in Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State since early August, according to the local council Chairman, Alhaji Babagana Ibrahim.

Ibrahim revealed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gashua on Friday that many of the victims were trapped under the rubble of collapsed mud houses.

The floods have also destroyed over 10,000 homes and vast farmlands across 200 communities.

The worst-hit villages include Misilli, Lawan Musa, Dagona, Dala, Katuzu, and Sabongarin Gashua.

The displaced individuals are currently taking refuge in three camps in Gashua: Goodluck, Zango 2, and Babuje.

Despite limited resources, the council has been providing food for those in the camps.

Former Senate President Ahmed Lawan recently donated N10 million to support the victims, and the state government is distributing non-food items.

Ibrahim appealed to the federal government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for urgent assistance, highlighting the growing number of displaced persons and the scale of the disaster.

“The situation is overwhelming for Bade Local Government to handle alone,” he said.

“We urgently need federal support to manage this crisis as the number of displaced persons continues to rise.”
