A devastating fire swept through the Olusola Saraki Market in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Friday night, destroying seven shops and goods worth millions of naira.
The fire, which was caused by a surge in power supply, started around 9:36 pm and was brought under control by the Kwara State Fire Service.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire spread quickly, engulfing several shops and stalls in the market.
The affected shops included meat vendors, clothing material shops, and provision stores.
The fire service responded promptly to the distress call, and their quick intervention helped to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the market.
Hassan Adekunle, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed that seven shops were completely burnt down in the fire.
He attributed the cause of the fire to a fluctuation in power supply, which resulted in a power surge from the power distribution company.
“The incident was caused by fluctuation, which resulted from a power surge from the power distribution company,” Adekunle said. “Our men responded quickly to the distress call, and their prompt intervention helped to save the remaining shops from being consumed by the inferno.”
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, sympathized with the market leadership, affected shop owners, and the entire market community.
The incident has left many traders counting their losses, and there are calls for the government to provide support to those affected by the fire.
