Fire Razes Lagos Market, Destroys Goods Worth Millions

A fire outbreak on Tuesday destroyed goods worth millions of naira at Ladipo Market, Lagos, after flames gutted several shops.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received distress calls through its 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines around 12:09 a.m., prompting the immediate activation of the state’s emergency response team from its Cappa Base.

“Upon arrival at 12:16 a.m., it was discovered that a warehouse surrounded by shops was engulfed in flames,” he said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was triggered by a power surge following the restoration of public electricity to the area.

Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries reported.

However, valuable goods, including electronics, generating sets, bicycles, auto spare parts, mobile phones, and home appliances, were destroyed in the blaze.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that the occupants of the affected warehouse have been educated on essential safety measures to help prevent future occurrences.
