A devastating fire that gutted a section of Nkwo Nnewi Market in Anambra State has been brought under control, thanks to the swift intervention of Prof. Joseph Ugboaja, the Chief Medical Director of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH).

The fire, which destroyed goods worth billions of naira, threatened to engulf the entire market, potentially wiping out trillions of naira worth of goods.

Traders and residents in Nnewi expressed gratitude for Prof. Ugboaja’s timely intervention, which saved the market from total destruction.

“The traders were jolted by the fire because they know what they would have lost if it affected other parts of the market, but thank God for the intervention of the CMD of NAUTH,” said Donald Okafor, a trader in the market.

Another trader, Okechukwu Okonkwo, commended the efforts of the volunteers who tried to extinguish the fire, but praised the management of NAUTH for their quick response.

“NAUTH has maintained a fully equipped and functional fire fighting department, which showcased their capacity and professionalism today,” he said.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the incident has highlighted the importance of having functional emergency response systems in place.

The bravery and quick thinking of Prof. Ugboaja and the NAUTH fire fighters have saved the day, but the incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of emergencies.
