A tragic incident occurred in Sokoto State on Wednesday when a fighter jet mistakenly bombed two villages, killing and injuring several innocent civilians. The jet was reportedly targeting a terrorist group, Lakurawa, but ended up striking the villages of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa in Silame Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, the airstrike occurred around 7 a.m., catching the villagers off guard. Many people were killed or injured, with some sources putting the death toll at over 10.
The Chairman of Silame LGA, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Daftarana, confirmed the attack and said efforts were underway to determine the extent of the casualties and damage. “The villagers were sitting peacefully when the bombs started dropping on the communities. They were innocent and peace-loving people who had no criminal record,” he said.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the airstrike. The Sokoto State Police Command declined to comment on the incident, citing that it was outside their purview.
The mistaken airstrike is a tragic reminder of the risks and consequences of military operations in civilian areas. The incident is likely to raise questions about the accuracy of intelligence and the measures in place to prevent such mistakes from happening in the future.
As the authorities investigate the incident, the people of Sokoto State are left to mourn the loss of their loved ones and pick up the pieces from this devastating tragedy.
