FG to Recruit 3,500 Teachers for Federal Unity Colleges

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to hire 3,500 new teachers for Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria.

This move was announced by Dr. Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Education, during the two-day National Stakeholders’ Forum on Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria.

The forum, themed “Revitalising Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria for Global Competitiveness,” brought together key players in the education sector to address current challenges in secondary education.

Dr. Sununu assured that the recruitment process would involve collaboration with the Office of the Head of Service, the Federal Civil Service Commission, and other relevant bodies to enhance the educational quality in the Federal Unity Colleges. He highlighted that extensive training programs for teachers have already been put in place and mentioned that over 1,000 staff have been trained in educational technology.

The Ministry has also established more than 53 vocational skills acquisition centres and is set to build an additional 50 model schools nationwide to improve teaching and learning environments. These initiatives align with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda for educational reform.

Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, emphasized the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the senior secondary curriculum to align with global standards. Represented by Rep. Mark Usani, Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services, Abbas pointed out existing challenges such as the shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate funding, and poor infrastructure.

Dr. Iyela Ajayi, Executive Secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), called for stakeholders to fully embrace and implement the national policy on senior secondary education.

This announcement marks a significant step towards enhancing Nigeria’s education system, aiming to meet international standards and improve future opportunities for students.
