FG Orders RCC Back to East-West Road Project with Seven-Day Ultimatum

The Federal Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) to resume work on the East-West Road project after failing to complete even one kilometre of the 15-kilometre section from Eleme Junction to Onne, Port Junction in Rivers State.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, delivered this ultimatum on Wednesday during an inspection tour of ongoing road projects in the South-South zone.

He expressed strong dissatisfaction with RCC’s performance, noting, “We are very sad with the manner and behaviour of this contractor, RCC.

The Federal Government has paid over N40 billion for this project, and not even one kilometre has been completed.”

Reports indicated that RCC has received over N40 billion in mobilisation funds but abandoned the project, citing the importation of machinery as the reason for the delay.

This excuse has been deemed unacceptable by the Federal Government.

Umahi stated further that no requests for price variation from RCC would be entertained, as the project does not justify any price adjustments.

He made it clear that the government would terminate the contract if RCC fails to return to the site within the stipulated time.

The minister also voiced concern over the significant inconvenience faced by road users due to the project’s delays.

He assured that the government is committed to securing interim funds for road maintenance until RCC resumes work.

Umahi’s inspection tour and subsequent ultimatum highlight the government’s determination to hold contractors accountable and ensure the timely completion of critical infrastructure projects.

This move is part of a broader effort to prioritise and expedite the completion of key infrastructure projects across the nation.
