The Federal Government has submitted a request to withdraw the case of “illegal possession of firearms” it had filed against Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor. This development transpired at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday. The request was made by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Abubakar, through an oral application. Abubakar explained that this decision follows the outcome of additional investigations.
However, Joseph Daudu, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria representing Emefiele, expressed his opposition to the withdrawal application. He maintained that the government should rectify its disregard for the court’s bail order to Emefiele prior to the consideration of the application.
Justice Nicholas Oweibo, the presiding judge, has set the date of Thursday, August 17, 2023, for delivering his ruling on the application.
After the day’s court proceedings, the DPP shared in an interview that a fresh set of 20 counts has been introduced against the suspended CBN governor at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court. Among these counts, one accuses Emefiele of engaging in “conferring unlawful advantages.”
